The main thrust of these passages is that a) reference librarians will not be needed to help users find most kinds of information in the future, and b) many of the things librarians will be able to offer to their institutions in the future (e.g., help with publishing, scholarly communication/copyright, IL instruction) could well be claimed by other departments of the university. The glaring question, then, (apart from do we agree with Lewis about this) is how will reference staff adapt and position ourselves to be a part of doing those jobs for the university?(questions from Scott Kaihoi).
